BEATITUDE

“The English word “beatitude” comes from the Latin word for “blessed,” beatus.”

These blessings are found at the start of the sermon on the mount, a long passage of Jesus teachings in the book of Matthew.

- Matthew 5:3

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their's is the kingdom of heaven.

Being poor in spirit we realise the only way out is to depend on God.

"The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart - These, O God you will not despise." - Psalms 51:17

----------------------------------

- Matthew 5:4

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

It is in the brokenness that you will find hope and healing.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” - Psalms 34:18

--------------------------------

- Matthew 5:5

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

The calling is to leverage our strength for the benefit of others.

"He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way."

- Psalms 25:9

---------------------------------

- Matthew 5:6

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are those who are desperate to do the will of God, for they will long for nothing.

"Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart." - Psalm 37:4

------------------------------------

- Matthew 5:7

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

We all make mistakes, those who show mercy and forgive, understand the mercy that’s been shown to them.

"For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you." - Matthew 6:14

-----------------------------------

- Matthew 5:8

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

We too often focus on our outward appearances but ignore our hearts.

"the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;" - Psalm 19:8

------------------------------------

- Matthew 5:9

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

As God has granted you peace so do likewise to others and teach them the same qualities.

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you." - Isaiah 26:3

-----------------------------------

- Matthew 5:10

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for their's is the kingdom of heaven.

By this we learn long-suffering and perseverance.

"But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away." - Mark 4:17

---------------------------------

- Matthew 5:11

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

We are not alone in hardships and when in times of trouble remember those who went before us.

"That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." - 2 Corinthians 12:10

----------------------------------

- Matthew 5:12

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

"I will declare Your Name to my people; in the assembly I will praise You. You who fear the Lord, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor Him! Revere Him, all you descendants of Israel! For He has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; He has not hidden His face from him but has listened to his cry for help." - Psalms 22:22-24
